Dreaming

Meaningless or Meaningful?

Most of the time when we dream we are in such a deep level of unconsciousness that we do not recall them at moment the moment of consciousness. If we recall dreams, most of the time we immediately remember fragments, but struggle to state the order of events and details. Usually we just remember a group of confused emotions and symbols.

For most of us on rare occasions, we will have a dream that appears so vivid that we recall strong emotional reactions during the dream and feel them for a while afterwards. At times, the feelings stay with us for days.

There are various theories as to why we dream. Some suggest that there is no real meaning behind them. Most of the theories that claim this believe that we only dream to separate information we collect during the day into categories and rid any information we do not need to hold onto anymore. However, to view dreams as just that is robbing us of insight to the roots of our inner desires, ambitions and our deepest personal truth.

Erasmus Darwin firmly believed that dreams allow us to;

* Work through our emotions.

* Have our fantasies and wishes fulfilled, especially the ones that we are unable to or feel we are unable to experience when awake.

* Work through our understanding/perceptions of our surroundings in our waking lives.

* Make more room for important information by throwing out information that is not needed anymore.

Erasmus Darwin proposed that without dreaming we would go insane due to the hallucinations we would experience when awake.

Much research has shed positive light in this theory as when we go not fall into REM sleep (a deep level of sleep that allows us to have clear and strong dreams) we display signs of anxiety and lower level of concentration.

Even though everyone experiences REM sleep, there are people who claim to never dream. However, we all dream. We just do not remember most of our dreams.

There are reasons as to why we forget our dreams;

* Approximately ¼ of our sleeping time is spent dreaming. It would be hard for us to recall what is on average 2 hours worth of subconscious imagery and feelings.

* Most of the time we only recall our dreams very soon after the moment we wake up

* Most of our lives are busy so a lot of us feel we do not have the time to work on recalling our dreams.

* Unless our dreams are very dramatic, bright or develop a strong emotional response, they are difficult to remember.

* The final reason could be that dreams are usually confusing and not structured in an orderly fashion. Dreams usually present themselves in snapshots that switch from one to another which makes it hard for our memory to recall.

Plenty of sleep and regular sleeping habits are one of the things needed for general well being. Healthy habits in sleeping promote extended and closer cycles in dreaming. This allows a higher chance for dream recall, which as many studies claim only occurs when the sleeper becomes awake during a dream.

From a spiritual point of view healthy sleeping habits allows more time and energy for dream recall and dream recall allows us to be aware of deeper wishes and evolutions surrounding us that we would otherwise not have been aware of.
